The first circle surrounding the image has the Latin inscription “Decus et Tutamen”, meaning “An ornament and a safeguard.” The second circle on the outer rim has the coin’s year of mintage, weight, metal content, and fineness inscribed as “BRITANNIA,” “2023,” ¼ oz,” “999.9 FINE GOLD.” The new obverse design honors King Charles III. His first depiction is signed by artist Martin Jennings, who portrayed a left profile, differently from the previous effigy of the Queen, which was a right-profile portrait. Encircling the King’s image, the inscriptions read: “25 POUNDS,” “CHARLES III,” and the letters “D. G. REX. F. D.” meaning “By the grace of God, King” in Latin.
